Embryo freezing in Istanbul: compare private hospitals with a clear summary
Embryo freezing keeps extra embryos from one IVF cycle for a later transfer. Here is the short version, the questions that matter, and how we help you choose between our partner hospitals. The medical details belong on each hospital's page.

The summary
- What it is. Good embryos that are not transferred can be frozen [3]. The usual method is vitrification, a very fast freezing in liquid nitrogen [3] at about −196 °C [7].
- Why. Spare embryos after a transfer, a very strong ovarian response (to lower the risk of OHSS), or a transfer timed for a well prepared uterus [1][2][3].
- Timeline. Stimulation takes about 10–14 days [1]. Egg collection takes about 20–30 minutes, and the wife goes back to the hotel the same day [2]. Embryos are watched for 2 to 5 days, then frozen [1]. The transfer happens in a later month, and the pregnancy test comes about 10–14 days after it [1][2].
- Success. Published information from an Istanbul IVF centre says frozen transfer success may be close to fresh transfer [1]. No one can promise a result [3]. The result depends mainly on the wife's age at egg collection, her health and her response to treatment [1][7].
Who can do it in Turkey
- Legally married couples only, with the wife's eggs and the husband's sperm [2][4].
- No donor eggs, no donor sperm, no donor embryos, and no surrogacy [2][5].
- You need an apostilled marriage certificate with a certified translation [2].
If your plan needs a donor or a surrogate, Turkey is not the place for it. We tell you before you book.
Storage rules
- According to Biruni Hospital, five years of storage, which can be extended by another five years, so ten years in total. The extension needs the couple's request and the approval of the competent authorities [2][4][6].
- The yearly signed request was annulled by Turkey's Council of State (Danıştay) on 17 April 2025 [6]. Some centres may still ask you to renew consent each year.
- Embryos can move to another centre inside Turkey if both of you apply in writing [4].
How we compare partner hospitals
We compare every partner centre on the same published criteria, listed below.
| Criterion | What we check |
|---|---|
| Licence | A Ministry of Health licence for assisted reproduction [5] |
| Accreditation | The accreditations each hospital publishes |
| Specialty | A dedicated IVF unit and specialists in reproductive medicine |
| Case volume | The number of IVF and embryo freezing cases the hospital reports. We show the hospital's own figure and do not estimate it |
| Freezing method | Vitrification on site |
| Written quote | Line by line, including freezing and the yearly storage fee [2] |
| Storage terms | How long, what renewal they ask for, how they contact you [4][6] |
| Moving embryos | Their process for a transfer to another centre in Turkey [4] |
| Team languages | Interpreter or staff in your language |
| Your dates | Fit with a 10–14 day stimulation and a later transfer trip [1] |
